John Barrett III
John Barrett III has been mayor of North Adams, Mass., since 1984 and is the longest-serving mayor in Massachusetts. From overseeing the city’s transformation from a single industry-based economy to a multi-business model, to acting as the driving force behind artistic space development, Mayor Barrett has made an indelible mark on the economy, education and the city’s cultural and recreational life. He convinced three governors that developing a multi-disciplinary contemporary arts center (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, or MassMoCA) built on a reclaimed and beautifully restored North Adams factory site would drive the North Adams and Northern Berkshire economy. MassMoCA served as the catalyst for the resurgence of the city’s economy, solidifying the mayor’s visionary reputation for his recognition of the importance of the arts to an economy.
Mayor Barrett's commitment to education is inspired by his nearly 15 years as an elementary school teacher early in his career. His city’s student/teacher ratio is one of the lowest in Massachusetts. He believes strongly in investing in school construction and the introduction of new technology at all levels. The North Adams public schools were among the first in Massachusetts to be wired for Internet access. The mayor holds bachelor's and master's degrees in education from North Adams State College (now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts).
